Job Summary & General Information
Hours Per Week: Availability between 7:30am to 6:30pm (actual shift will vary); 40-50 hours/week
The City of Alpharetta Recreation, Parks and Cultural Services Department is seeking Arts Center and FFA Log Cabin Summer Day Camp staff (includes arts & crafts, and history) to provide a safe, fun, and memorable camp experience for children aged 7 to 13 years. The Camp Counselor would need to be available to work from May 20– August 16.
Job Description
The purpose of this position is to assist in the organization and supervision of the day-to-day operation of a summer visual arts and history camp program. Reports to the Summer Camp Director and/or Cultural Services Staff.
Overview of Duties and Responsibilities
The Camp Counselor will be responsible for:
Acts as camp director in the absence of the camp director.
Assists director in monitoring and evaluating effectiveness of camp program;
Assist in maintaining camp schedule of activities and maintains inventory of camp supplies;
Communicates with camp director about studio and program needs; assists camp instructors during class sessions when necessary; makes recommendations for replacement items.
Assist in age-appropriate games, crafts, and activities as needed for children between the ages of 7 -13.
Assists in coordinating the set-up and clean-up of camp including group area/location assignment and schedule; cleanliness of camp areas or studios as applies
Adheres to camp policies and procedures and ensures staff and camper compliance
Plans age-appropriate games, crafts, and activities as needed. Reports all necessary discipline actions to Camp Director as necessary.
Under supervision of camp director, prepares accident/incident reports as needed and follows established procedures for reporting accidents/incidents; handles medical, safety, and severe weather emergencies per the procedures noted in the camp staff manual and during in-service training; completes needed reports and submits them to the appropriate party.
Participates in in-service training as required.
Maintains positive relationship with parents, campers, and staff.
Assists in arts and history community programs as needed. Other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED or equivalent supplemented by one to two years previous experience and/or training that includes working in a camp environment; or any equivalent combination of education and specialized training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
At least two (1) year of paid or volunteer experience assisting in art and recreational activities for groups of children ages 7-13 in a structured environment is preferred.
Individuals with a background in art education or formal art instruction are strongly desired.
Applicant must have knowledge of summer camp planning and administration.
Applicant must have strong leadership, customer service and interpersonal skills.
Applicant must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions. Exceptional communication skills are essential.
Applicant must have PC computer skills, particularly with the internet, e-mail, MS Excel and Word documents. Applicant must be willing to work cooperatively with others.
Applicant must be able to interpret policies and procedures.
Applicant must provide their own transportation.
Applicant must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Applicant must be willing to work a flexible daytime schedule, Monday through Friday. Pre-Employment Requirements
Applicant must clear a criminal background check.
Applicant must pass a mandatory drug test.
Hired applicants must possess a valid certificate of course completion for First Aid training that includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Children and Infant, first aid, and AED. This training must be from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. The City of Alpharetta will offer a CPR course during the week of camp training for all those who need this certification.
Hired applicants must provide official verification as to identity and work authorization.
