The Emergent Digital Practices program (EDP) is a groundbreaking fusion of digital art, design, culture, and technology focused on building a better world. Our visionary work combines creative making and critical thinking. Our faculty and students seek to better understand emerging technologies and their impacts on cultures and ecologies. We use those technologies in a hands-on, collaborative environment to contribute to more meaningful and equitable communities. Our faculty and students bring together inclusive digital design, electronic and new media arts and technology, and creative coding to contribute to our investigations of culture and society, the arts and sciences, media philosophy, speculative and critical futurisms, postcolonialism, and social justice.

The EDP program is an interdisciplinary component of the University of Denver. As the University's largest and most varied academic unit, the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) is comprised of artists, learners, performers, scholars, scientists, and teachers across 21+ departments, programs, schools, and centers and acts as a central hub where many of the University's disciplines intersect. Nearly all 6,000 undergraduates at the University take liberal arts courses with us, and about one-third of these students declare a first major in a CAHSS program. Most of our departments, programs and schools offer master's or doctoral programs. CAHSS scholars, artists, instructors, staff, and students collaborate in a shared quest for knowledge about the human condition and the development of skills to improve our local and global communities. Position Summary

The Emergent Digital Practices program welcomes applications for a non-tenure track, one-year Visiting Teaching Assistant Professor (VTAP) in Emergent Digital Practices to begin Fall 2024.

We seek an artist/scholar who is creatively and critically engaged in the practices and discourses of New Media. The successful candidate will demonstrate the potential for excellent teaching and will have a creative practice utilizing digital tools. We are looking for candidates with capabilities to teach across the EDP curriculum, including our foundations courses, advanced studio making courses, and advanced cultural studies courses. In addition, candidates may need to teach a cultural/critical course (broadly defined as the history, aesthetics, and theory of various making subcultures in the digital realm, technocultures more broadly defined, and science & technology studies) for the common curriculum of undergraduate students across the University.

Essential Functions

  • Teach eight in-person courses in the Emergent Digital Practices Program over three 10-week quarters (Fall, Winter, and Spring), including up to six sections in our foundation sequence.
  • Teach one or more sections of undergraduate upper division classes within their area of specialty, including both studio making courses and digital cultures courses (broadly defined as history, art, internet, and other subcultures in the digital realm).
  • Teach at multiple levels of a curriculum that includes a BA, BFA, MA, and MFA.
  • Teach courses that will contribute to the Univers ty's undergraduate common curriculum. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrate understanding of relevant cultural issues relating to emerging media and technology practices.

  • Demonstrate through their portfolio an understanding of and experience creating with a range of digital tools.
  • Be able to teach our Foundation courses using Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Audacity, P5.js and other accessible and open source tools.
  • Demonstrate experience through their professional work relevant to the topics of focus for upper division courses.
  • Be able to effectively integrate diverse and inclusive perspectives and practices into their courses. Required Qualifications

  • MFA/PhD/MPS or equivalent terminal degree at time of appointment.

  • Candidate must be able to teach in more than one of the foundational areas, using the adopted digital tools of EDP.
  • Candidate must be able to teach courses that focus on cultural and critical theoretical aspects of digital technology. Preferred Qualifications

  • A professional creative practice utilizing digital tools.

  • Previous college-level experience teaching one or more topics listed in this job posting.
  • Experience using Canvas or similar course management systems. Work Schedule Academic year 2024-25; exact schedule to be coordinated with program director.
