POSITION PURPOSE

The Regional Pharmacy Director is responsible for the planning, priority setting, coordination, implementation and evaluation of pharmaceutical services across the MercyOne Regional Health Ministry. Accountable for strategic alliances and service line excellence through the development and implementation of regional and local RHM strategic and tactical plans for MercyOne Pharmacy services.

Oversees the development and ongoing operations for MercyOne RHM pharmacies. Integrates services system wide, including programmatic efficiencies. In collaboration with system leadership, assists in developing strategic plans and providing direction in operations. Always demonstrates and promotes service excellence.

Works collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team to provide administrative support and direction to leadership within MercyOne pharmacy services. Represents Pharmacy in the planning of multidisciplinary or interdepartmental programs as they relate to clinical care. Collaborating with the Medical staff and within the limits of approved policies and budgets, the Regional Pharmacy Director assumes operational responsibility and oversight of human, fiscal and material resources as well as the integration of the Pharmacy Services across MercyOne.

Responsible for quality and standards of pharmacy services, performance improvement, program management, business operations, budget and resource utilization, and management development for designated areas. Functions within the standards, policies, procedures and guidelines of Trinity Health.

Responsible for the successful achievement of strategic institutional and corporate objectives and goals, optimizing resources, and maintaining compliance with all regulatory bodies. Provides leadership and direction to the organization and pharmacy staff through coordination, oversight, and/or delegation of the principal duties and responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Collaborates with local, regional and system level Clinical, Operational and Business Development/Planning executive leaders to develop priority pharmacy services that will accelerate clinical integration and demonstrate value-based care. Aligns regional and local strategies with Trinity Health system office strategies and performance metrics. Orients to regionalization financial targets and ensures pharmacy services achieves defined metrics and targets. Directs all MercyOne system Pharmacy Services, including serving as the primary pharmacy representative on selected organizational committees as appropriate. Accountable executive leader in the discovery of and development of new partnerships with external business partners and continuum of care partners. Key consideration given to the implementation of clinical work stream projects selected by clinically integrated networks within region. Collaborates with staff that provides evaluative and analytical consultation within the region in support of strategy, business and capital planning and obtains analytics and metrics for pharmacy services to demonstrate baseline and performance improvement targets. Creates scorecards for key performance measures for pharmacy services and drives tactics to improve such measures. Key responsibilities include developing programs and services for pharmacy services that are patient focused and achieve objectives across the entire RHM. Collaborates with system office executives to achieve RHM wide goals. Develops and implements market specific strategies and tactics to expand market share for pharmacy services in each local market within region. Creates brand recognition in each market in partnership with regional marketing executives. Achieves regional recognition for high quality and safe patient care through participation in accrediting and certifying organizations. Acts as a strategic partner with the Executive Leadership Team, Senior Leadership Teams, and other members of the management team to position MercyOne for the immediate and long-term future. Partners with local divisions, markets and CIN's Fosters positive relationships among and between group practices in region and seeks to minimize cultural barriers that exist between private practice and employed practices in order to enhance achievement of regional strategies. In partnership with regional executives, prioritizes regional and local requests for and directs support for annual and multi-year business plan development for pharmacy services for each market based upon the regional strategic plan to include both new and existing products and services. Identifies and promotes strategic alliances, which will drive new revenue opportunities and enhance the ability of the organization to serve the needs of the region. Negotiates and manages relationships with various business partners. Provides direction and support for the ongoing development of a comprehensive service line for each market. In partnership with regional and local executives and medical staffs conceives and develops strategy, promotes operational standards, and ensures that services are coordinated across the region. Seeks to minimize duplication of services and programs through comprehensive portfolio management. Ensures that the strategies, priorities, and operations of the markets are aligned and complementary, ensuring a system approach to services within MercyOne. Identify and implement the use of appropriate metrics consistently across the System to Measure quality outcomes that will allow the development of performance improvement activities to improve those designated quality outcomes. Ensures compliance with the Iowa State Department of Health regulations, The Joint Commission standards, AABB and other applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations. Such requirements may pertain to Quality Improvement, Risk Management, Infection Control, Mandated In-services, OASIS, Compliance Programs, HIPAA, etc. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with patient care leaders to ensure the safety, effectiveness, and quality of Pharmacy Department services. Ensures the financial performance of the departments are within approved capital and operating budgets, including the development of annual budgets, monitoring and managing departmental revenues and expenses. Ensures the facilities, equipment and information system needs of the Pharmacy Department meet the needs of a modern, high functioning pharmacy unit. Ensures environmental conditions are appropriate for the storage and dispensing of all medications, and provides a safe and secure environment in which colleagues are protected from physical, chemical, and biological hazards Leads the effort to monitor and report trends in drug utilization to Administration, and clinical staff as appropriate. Optimally utilize and integrate centralized support services and technology. Integrate processes to assure the quality of pharmacy care and services across practice settings, with focus on inpatient pharmacy, and to assure regulatory and corporate compliance. Oversee operating budgets across inpatient pharmacy services to assure appropriate resource utilization and consistent operations and scope of service and monitor performance against budgets and makes appropriate adjustments to achieve financial goals. Minimum Qualifications

Education: Degree in pharmacy required, Pharm.D. degree preferred. Master’s degree in business administration or related field preferred. Licensure / Certification: Current license to practice as a Registered Pharmacist in the State of Iowa or be eligible to apply for the license within 30 days of hire Experience: Minimum ten (10) years of work experience with large scale project management and delivery required. Minimum five (5) years of leadership-level experience in management of inpatient or regional pharmacy. Knowledgeable about the pharmaceutical supply chain, clinical therapeutics, human resources management, and budget management Experience with project planning or developing strategic talent supply strategies. Experience working in a metrics driven environment. Ability to develop and implement a strategic shared vision for pharmacy services Proven leadership skills in relationship to motivating and empowering staff Preferred experience working in an organization of comparable size and complexity, preferably in healthcare.

Physical and Mental Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Must be able to adapt to frequently changing work priorities and be able to prioritize and balance the requirements of working with the System Office and Regional Health Ministries (RHMs).

  • Must be able to travel to the various MercyOne sites as needed.

  • Must be able to effectively analyze, communicate and respond.

  • Must reside in one of the MercyOne regional service area(s).
