Position Details

The Resource Center (RC) is Wesleyan University’s multi-cultural center, and has a mission to support, empower, and engage students with underrepresented and marginalized identities. By collaborating with students to promote social justice programming, community development, and intersectional education and awareness initiatives on campus, The RC strives to provide a safe and inclusive environment for students from all identities, backgrounds, and experiences to connect, learn, organize, and lead. The RC’s main areas of focus are race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, and disability.

Reporting to the Director of The Resource Center, the Assistant Director implements programming that creates and sustains an inclusive and supportive campus climate. In addition to supporting the programs and initiatives of The RC, the Assistant Director plays a role in providing support and guidance to student affinity groups, particularly around heritage month activities. The Assistant Director will also support our First Things First ( FTF ) program, which centers first-generation and limited-income students, and is one of our Pathways to Inclusive Education ( PIE ) programs.

Responsibilities include:

MULTICULTURAL PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES

  • Serving as a resource, advocate, and advisor on multicultural awareness, community development issues, and social justice to student leaders and organizations within The RC focus areas

  • Supporting student-led initiatives that foster community development and greater awareness/understanding of student identities and backgrounds, including organizing heritage month and awareness week programming

  • Assisting the Dean for Academic Equity, Inclusion, and Success in the development and implementation of the First Things First pre-orientation program that aids first-generation/low-income students with transitioning into Wesleyan University

  • Assisting in the development of trainings, activities, and spaces that afford students the opportunities to expand knowledge, insight, and skills necessary to appreciate and successfully navigate diverse intersectional environments

  • Working in collaboration with colleagues within the Office for Equity & Inclusion, as well as committees of colleagues from across campus, to actively engage the Wesleyan community in important and challenging dialogues about equity and inclusion

    SUPERVISION AND LEADERSHIP

  • Supervising, training, and evaluating The RC student interns

  • Directing student programming and cultivating effective partnerships with student organizations

  • Collaborating with staff and faculty partners on implementing the mission and programming of The RC

  • Working with The RC staff to develop and implement programs and services that foster intercultural competencies among students, faculty and staff

    ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Assisting with the development, implementation, and upkeep of all Resource Center operations, programs, and services

  • Assisting with the preparation of reports and assessments that enable campus stakeholders to understand what The RC is accomplishing and how it may be able to further develop

  • Facilitating referrals to appropriate academic and/or administrative departments

  • Other duties as assigned.

This is an on-campus position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of experience facilitating events, programming, or workshops; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.

  • Demonstrated competency working with diverse and intersectional communities.

  • Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds.

  • Good understanding of student development theory and social justice work.

  • Excellent problem-solving, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work weekend and evening hours or a flexible schedule on a consistent basis throughout the fall and spring semesters. These needs are particularly pronounced during Orientation/Opening Days and during Commencement.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree focused on higher education administration, student identity development, multicultural counseling, or other related fields

  • 3 years of experience creating co-curricular programming for marginalized and underrepresented student populations.

  • 3 years of experience facilitating multicultural and social justice education workshops and training
