SLUCare Cardiothoracic Surgery (http://www.ssmhealth.com/slucare/services/general-surgery/cardiothoracic-surgery) is actively seeking a lead Advanced Practice Provider to join our growing department at SLU Hospital, a Level I Time Critical Diagnosis hospital in Stroke, Trauma, and STEMI.

Job Details

  • Growing cardiothoracic division!

  • Endoscopic vein harvesting

  • 12 hour shifts, 1:4 call. Protected admin time

  • First & Seconding assisting in the OR

  • Chest tube placement

  • Assisting with ECMO cannulation

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of nationally accredited Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) Program

  • NPs must have ACNP

  • Current PA/NP licensure in appropriate state

  • Four years of experience, with two years in OR

  • Cardiothoracic and ICU experience highly preferred

  • Leadership experience

Job Summary:

In collaboration with a Cardiothoracic surgeon, the APP is primarily responsible for examining patients, formulating diagnosis, and developing a treatment plan for patients, performing technical, clinical and surgical procedures, documenting patient progress and surgical care. In addition, the APP will perform greater saphenous vein harvests and radial artery harvests, place and remove chest tubes and catheters, intubate and extubate patients and place and remove central lines and arterial lines. The APP may also write prescriptions and medical orders.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Obtain complete medical history and physical data on patients. Performs complete physical exam and records findings. Collaborate with physician(s) in managing acute and long-term medical needs of patients as needed.

  • Synthesize data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan utilizing principles of prevention. Interprets and integrates data to determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

  • Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures and maintain and review patient charts for tests results and other pertinent health information.

  • Assists the physicians in the hospital by making patient rounds, recording patient progress notes, compiling and recording discharge summaries, and accurately writing and executing orders under the supervision of a physician and with physician.

  • Interview and advise patients regarding health and illness prevention. Recommend community resources to meet patient and family needs. Instruct patients and families regarding medications, treatment instructions, and other patient education.

  • Manage medical and surgical emergencies. Provide monitoring and continuity of care between physician visits.

  • Issues written prescription orders for drugs under the supervision of the physician.

  • Triage patient telephone calls and provide consultation.

  • Coordinate daily assignments and call assignments in a timely manner and participate in the recruitment and interviewing process of new Surgical Specialty APP’s.

  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

  • Graduate of a nationally accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program

  • Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) through successful completion of the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE)

  • Current PA licensure in appropriate state

EXPERIENCE

  • Four years' experience required, with two years as a first assist in CVOR specific to cardiac surgery

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Constant use of speech to share information through oral communication.

  • Constant standing and walking.

  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.

  • Frequent sitting, reaching and keyboard use/data entry.

  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.

  • Frequent use of smell to detect/recognize odors.

  • Frequent use of hearing to receive oral communication, distinguish body sounds and/or hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.

  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.

  • Occasional lifting/moving of patients.

  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, gripping and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.

  • Occasional driving.

  • Rare crawling and running.
