Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two years of experience as a mechanic.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Training as a mechanic from a trade school, vocational-technical school, or military school will substitute for the required experience. Training will be credited in six month increments.

FUNCTION OF WORK:

To perform skilled maintenance and repair of small engines and mobile equipment.

LEVEL OF WORK:

Experienced.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Direct from a Mechanic Supervisor or higher level maintenance personnel.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None.

LOCATION OF WORK:

May be used by all state agencies.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from Mechanic 1 by the presence of independent responsibility on major components such as engines, transmissions, differentials, etc.

Differs from Mechanic 3 by the absence of responsibility for repair and overhaul of complex or specialized systems such as hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and/or electronic systems on mobile or stationary equipment.

Examples of Work

EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.

Performs repair/maintenance and inspection related activities on vehicles and heavy construction equipment.

Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights.

Locates causes of malfunction through inspection of major component parts such as gears, rings, pistons, rods, gaskets, crank shafts, valves, seals, etc. Orders and installs replacement parts.

Connects repaired units to related mechanisms, and adjusts systems to proper operation.

Connects fuel, hydraulic, and oil systems and make adjustments to assure proper operation.

Uses grinding and seating equipment, clutch pilot tools, gear pulling tools, and common hand tools.
