Scientific Systems is looking for a Senior Research Engineer with an established background to develop the next generation of advanced perceptual autonomy capabilities for single- and multi-agent uncrewed systems. This work will be crucial in advancing our mission to create AI/ML-enabled capabilities for our customers' most challenging missions.

As a Research Engineer in the Multi-sensory Perception Group, you will help shape SSCI’s research strategy for the challenging perception problems in multi-modal sensor fusion, active perception, object pose estimation, semantic segmentation, and scene understanding.

  • Work as part of a team to develop, integrate, and field test advanced technologies and system software in perception, sensor fusion, scene understanding, and cognitive architectures.

  • Support integration on physical systems, including uncrewed sea, ground, aerial, and space vehicles.

  • Assume technical leadership over algorithm and software R&D efforts.

  • Contribute technical materials and help develop new concepts for proposals and white papers, and present materials to stakeholders.

  • Remain current on state-of-the-art research in key areas of AI/ML.

Requirements

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree + 6 years of experience in deep computer vision, scene understanding, autonomous robotics, AI/ML, or related fields.

  • Experience using one or more sensor modalities (e.g., EO, IR, SAR, LIDAR, etc.)

  • Experience with standard tools used for computer vision and AI/ML (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow).

  • Experience with modern C++ and Python.

  • Experience implementing and testing computer vision or autonomy algorithms on real-world systems.

  • Prior small team leadership experience

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with visual SLAM or visual odometry.

  • Experience with real and synthetic dataset capture.

  • Experience with MLOps and data governance.

  • Familiarity with edge computing devices (e.g., Nvidia Orin).

  • Knowledge of Gazebo, AirSim, or Unreal is desirable.

  • Familiarity developing with ROS 1/2, DDS, CUDA, or similar middleware.

  • Familiarity with Docker containerized development.

  • Familiarity with collaborative development tools and practices (e.g., Agile development, DevOps, Git, CI/CD).

  • Experience with UAV systems is a plus.

  • Good oral and written communication skills are a must.
